Mediation talks between Icelandic air traffic controllers and business organizations have been postponed until 11 AM tomorrow. The state mediator delayed the meeting at 6 PM tonight.
The negotiations began this morning at the mediator's offices in Reykjavík. Representatives from the air traffic controllers union presented new proposals yesterday evening that were considered substantial enough to continue discussions.
Workers cancelled a planned overnight strike that would have affected international airspace over Greenland. This airspace is controlled from Iceland.
Three additional work stoppages remain scheduled. The next strike will begin at 2 PM Thursday at Keflavík Airport control tower. It will last five hours.
No air traffic will be permitted in the airport's control zone during this period. Runways and taxiways will also close.
Another strike is planned for Reykjavík Airport on Friday. Saturday would affect approach control areas for both Keflavík and Reykjavík airports.
Approach control manages aircraft descending toward airports. Without these services, flights cannot land safely.
The ongoing labor dispute threatens Iceland's crucial aviation sector. Tourism represents over 8% of Iceland's economy, making airport operations vital.
Travelers should monitor their flight status closely this week. Airlines may cancel or reschedule flights during strike periods.
