Electric vehicle drivers using the Hellisheiði Power Station fast charger now face longer waits. The station will convert to standard charging after equipment failure.
The charging station near Iceland's major geothermal plant served users for years. It recently malfunctioned and requires replacement.
Lilja Björk Hauksdóttir, communications director for ON Power, confirmed the changes. "The Hellisheiði charging station has been operational for many years but recently failed," she said in a statement. "We are now reviewing charging infrastructure needs before taking next steps."
Charging demand at this location decreased recently. More charging options became available in Reykjavík and Hveragerði. Electric vehicle range also improved since the station's installation.
Modern charging locations now require more connectors and higher power output. ON Power will reassess how to best serve Hellisheiði area users.
Some regular users expressed concern about the downgrade. The company welcomes feedback from affected drivers. Future fast charging needs will be reevaluated when determining long-term arrangements.
The temporary solution creates genuine inconvenience for travelers between Reykjavík and Iceland's South Coast. This highlights the growing pains of electric infrastructure upgrades across remote Nordic regions.
