The Reykjavík branch of Iceland's Revival Party voted overwhelmingly tonight to hold a leadership primary. Members will select their candidate for next spring's municipal elections. Current Reykjavík party chair Þórdís Lóa Þórhallsdóttir announced she will not seek re-election.
Natan Kolbeinsson, chairman of Revival's Reykjavík division, said he welcomes the leadership contest. The party faces an open race with several potential candidates emerging.
Björg Magnúsdóttir recently joined the center-right party and is considered a contender. She previously worked as media advisor and mayoral assistant. Former State Prosecutor Aðalsteinn Leifsson confirmed last month he might run for leadership.
Political advisor Róbert Ragnarsson's name also circulates in leadership discussions. He formerly served as mayor of Grindavík, a fishing town near Reykjavík.
The leadership contest comes as Icelandic parties prepare for 2025 municipal elections. Revival Party seeks to strengthen its position in Reykjavík politics. This primary signals internal democracy but also reveals competition for influence within the party.
