Kiruna municipality has held over 30 school and community dialogues to discuss educational shortcomings. Officials gathered public input about existing problems in local schools.

The city now plans to implement a new school structure. This decision follows LKAB mining company's updated ground deformation forecasts.

Viktoria Björklund, head of Culture and Education Administration, explained their approach. "We will direct as many resources as possible toward students, teaching, and support," she said in a statement. "We won't focus on facility operations and logistics. Our proposal means fewer school units."

The plan includes building one new centrally located school. Teachers reportedly worry about overcrowding in remaining schools.

Mining company LKAB's new ground stability assessment changed everything. More residential areas will face demolition, along with three schools: Luossavaara School, Triangle School, and Högalid School.

The committee also decided to phase out middle school grades at Svappavaara School. This affects remote communities near the Swedish Arctic mine.

Kiruna faces the complex reality of prioritizing mining interests over community stability. The town continues its gradual relocation due to expanding mine operations beneath the city.
