A 43-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison for raping a young woman in a basement on Amager nine years ago, Ekstra Bladet reported, according to Berlingske and Politiken.
The assault took place on 3 August 2017, when the woman came home at night after a night out and was attacked in a basement under a residential building on Amager. She was grabbed in a hard chokehold and threatened into doing what the man said before he raped her. The case stood unsolved for years until last spring, when Amir Mehran, who had no previous criminal record, was arrested in another case in North Jutland.
A DNA test then matched traces secured from the rape case in Copenhagen. Mehran denied guilt and declined to speak during the trial because of his mental state.
Prosecutor Maria Cingari argued for an ordinary prison sentence of around four years, pointing to the strength of the DNA findings and the fact that the man lived in Copenhagen at the time. Defence lawyer Knud Vedelsby said DNA traces should not stand alone under Danish legal practice. The court weighed the seriousness of the case and voted two to one for prison.
The sentence was appealed on the spot, with the defence seeking acquittal and, alternatively, a milder penalty.
In a separate case, Østjyllands Politi has arrested and charged a 65-year-old man for sexual assaults committed about 13 years ago against his daughter, who was around 12 at the time. The case was reopened after new information emerged during recordings for the TV 2 programme 'Fars lille pige', in which his three daughters appear. He is due before a preliminary hearing at the district court in Randers on Wednesday at 09.30, where a prosecutor will demand he be held in custody.
Defence lawyer Lasse Hummelhoff Frandsen told TV 2: "My client unequivocally denies that any assault took place. Mai-Brit Storm Thygesen, counsel for the daughters, said she was "very pleased" with the arrest. "The three women are very happy that the police have taken the case seriously," she said.
