Thousands of MobilePay users in Denmark woke up Thursday morning to a significant upgrade. The popular payment app now functions as a contactless payment card in stores across the country. This development marks a major expansion of MobilePay's capabilities in the Danish payment market.
The update began rolling out around 6:30 AM to all 4.6 million Danish users. Initially, approximately 700,000 users can access the new feature. These are customers of Danske Bank or SEB Kort who hold Mastercards. After a quick setup process, these users can now tap their phones at payment terminals nationwide.
Jeanette Hertzum, country manager for Denmark at Vipps MobilePay, described the functionality. "It works similarly to contactless payment cards or Apple Pay and Google Pay," she explained in a statement. The company sees clear advantages in consolidating multiple payment functions within a single mobile application.
This move represents MobilePay's strategic response to growing competition in Denmark's digital payment sector. While Apple Pay and Google Pay already offer similar contactless functionality, MobilePay maintains its unique position. The app integrates peer-to-peer payments, bill splitting, and now contactless retail payments in one platform.
The expansion plan includes adding Visa card support and more banks by early 2026. Direct account payments will follow later. Hertzum confirmed the company expects to roll out to additional banks as soon as they're ready. "We're working to include the majority of remaining banks at the beginning of 2026," she stated.
MobilePay's contactless payment feature debuted in Norway in late 2024. The Danish launch completes the Nordic expansion for this particular service. The company emphasizes its Nordic origins as a competitive advantage. Users can access customer support in Danish from local representatives, a feature Hertzum highlighted as particularly valuable.
The timing of this rollout reflects MobilePay's effort to maintain market leadership in Denmark's rapidly evolving payment landscape. With most Danish consumers already using MobilePay for peer-to-peer transactions, the contactless payment option creates a more comprehensive financial tool. This development could potentially reduce the need for physical wallets as smartphone payment capabilities expand.
Industry observers have anticipated MobilePay's entry into contactless payments for some time. The move positions the app as a stronger competitor against international payment giants while leveraging its established user base. For Danish consumers, it represents another step toward comprehensive digital payment solutions that reduce reliance on physical payment methods.
