A new stargazing shelter opened in Heiðmörk nature reserve Thursday evening. The shelter provides darkness protection for optimal star viewing. It features wind protection from Iceland's harsh northern winds.
Stargazing expert Sævar Helgi Bragason attended the opening ceremony. He explained the shelter's design helps block light pollution from the capital area. Visitors can now see the Milky Way, faint meteor showers, and northern lights more clearly.
"This is as good as it gets for a location relatively close to the capital," Bragason said in a statement. He described the shelter as an excellent spot to observe night-time nature phenomena.
Bragason noted several clear nights are forecast ahead. He recommended people visit the shelter to enjoy the views. He also advised dressing warmly for Iceland's cold night temperatures.
The Heiðmörk nature reserve sits just southeast of Reykjavík. It offers one of the darkest sky areas near the capital region. Light pollution from urban areas typically obscures celestial views.
