A large-scale search operation took place in central Sønderborg on Friday evening after multiple reports of a woman screaming from the cold water near Kong Christian den X's Bridge. The South and South Jutland Police responded with significant resources, including a helicopter in the air, search boats on the water, police dogs, and officers searching both north and south of the bridge as well as the harbor area from land. The initial emergency calls were received at 6:45 p.m., prompting immediate action.
After several hours of intensive searching without locating anyone in distress, police spoke with a witness who provided a plausible explanation. The witness reported seeing a young woman cycling away from the bridge area while shouting loudly around the same time the calls came in. This information was consistent with the timeline of events and helped clarify the source of the reported screams.
Jacob Matthiesen, duty officer with the South and South Jutland Police, confirmed these details to Ekstra Bladet on Saturday morning. He stated that based on the witness account and the lack of evidence indicating an actual emergency, authorities decided to end the search shortly before 9 p.m. The incident demonstrates how public reports can lead to major emergency responses even when no real danger exists. Police emphasized that the operation was conducted thoroughly and responsibly, and they thanked the public for their cooperation and vigilance.
