The Skaftárhreppur harvest festival in Iceland features open houses, children's activities, and musical performances. Local officials report strong turnout for the weekend celebration that concludes Sunday with a church service and concert. Community events like this help maintain rural Icelandic traditions.

Residents and visitors in Skaftárhreppur, Iceland are enjoying a weekend harvest celebration. The festival offers diverse activities for all ages throughout the weekend.
Local homes opened for public tours on Saturday. Children's entertainment filled the sports hall in Kirkjubæjarklaustur during the afternoon.
Bergur Sigfússon chairs the Skaftárhreppur Welfare Council. He confirmed the packed schedule has drawn strong participation. "There's been a full program these past days," he said. "We have open houses at several farms where people can visit today. Then children's entertainment in the sports hall follows this afternoon, with comedy tonight and a dance to finish."
The harvest festival began Thursday and concludes Sunday afternoon. Final events include a harvest mass at Prestbakkakirkja church. Musicians Ellen Kristjáns and Eyþór Gunnarsson will perform at the Memorial Chapel of Reverend Jón Steingrímsson.
All community members and visitors can participate in the weekend events. Such local festivals remain important for maintaining rural traditions despite Iceland's growing tourism economy.
These community gatherings help preserve cultural practices that might otherwise fade in modern times.
