Sweden's State Service Centers will close approximately 35 of their 148 offices nationwide over the next three years. The closures come as part of budget reductions totaling 150 million Swedish kronor. At least 12 of the affected offices serve vulnerable suburban areas, according to mapping data.

The closures affect service centers in locations including Gothenburg's Biskopsgården and Stockholm's Brandbergen. These offices help citizens with matters related to employment services, social insurance, migration, pensions, and tax authorities.

Felix da Silva, who works at the Rinkeby service office, expressed concern about the closures. He said being physically present in communities provides important direct access to government services. The Rinkeby office opened last year and will remain operational despite the broader cuts.

Civil Minister Erik Slottner defended the decision, stating visitor numbers haven't increased at the same rate as office expansion. He argued the system needs efficiency improvements. The government will instead invest in flexible office solutions and digital services, allocating 10 million kronor annually for this transition.

Service centers received approximately 2.8 million visitors last year, up from 2.6 million the previous year. The government claims digital services and mobile offices will strengthen state presence while making services more accessible to citizens and businesses.

This move reflects Sweden's ongoing digitalization push across public services. The closures particularly impact areas already facing socioeconomic challenges, raising questions about equal access to government support. Vulnerable suburbs often have higher proportions of immigrants and lower-income residents who may rely more heavily on in-person services.

The decision comes amid broader debates about state presence in marginalized communities. Some critics argue reducing physical offices could further isolate these areas from mainstream society. Others see digital transformation as inevitable and potentially more efficient.

The Karlshamns service center was initially on the closure list but received a reprieve following local advocacy. This suggests some flexibility in implementation, though most planned closures appear firm.

As Sweden continues its digital transition, the challenge remains balancing efficiency with equitable access. The success of alternative service models will depend on whether they genuinely meet diverse citizen needs across different communities and demographic groups.
