A 22-year-old man rescued an elderly driver from a burning vehicle in southern Finland. While bystanders watched, Bilal Camara pulled the man to safety as flames engulfed the car.
The incident occurred on a Saturday evening in Riihimäki's Peltosaari district. The car owner, an older man, was inside when the vehicle caught fire. Flames spread to his jacket, creating a dangerous situation.
Camara acted quickly. He first pulled the man from the burning car. When the man tried to return toward the vehicle, Camara moved him dozens of meters away to safety.
The rescue service later honored Camara for his bravery. The man survived with minor injuries thanks to the swift rescue.
Petri Välkkynen, the duty fire chief for Kanta-Häme Rescue Department, explained the situation. He said about ten people stood watching the burning car without acting. This is common in accident situations where people feel unsure about helping.
Välkkynen praised Camara's exemplary actions. The car had already started burning from the rear when rescue efforts began. This required genuine courage.
Camara received an honorary certificate and a crystal candlestick with the rescue department's logo. He appeared modest about the recognition.
"I was happy about the award," Camara said. "I didn't expect to receive one. If I see someone suffering, I must help them."
Camara moved to Finland from Gambia with his family two years ago. He currently speaks better English than Finnish but clearly stated one thing in Finnish: "I want to live in Finland with my family."
He added, "I want to thank Finnish people. I dream of studying business economics."
Camara has not met the man he saved, and the man hasn't contacted him. Still, Camara hopes the man is doing well.
Fire chief Välkkynen described Camara as a smart young man and wished him all the best. He noted that Camara takes quick action rather than remaining passive.
This rescue highlights how individual bravery can make the difference between life and death when others hesitate to intervene.
