Residents in loft-style apartment buildings on Byälvsvägen in Stockholm have transitioned from individual mail slots to shared postboxes located in their stairwells. This change was implemented following a formal requirement from Postnord, Sweden’s national postal service. Postnord stated that continuing door-to-door mail delivery in these buildings posed safety risks on the elevated walkways, or loftgångar, which could lead to slip or trip accidents. The postal company warned that if the housing provider did not install centralized mailboxes, it would stop delivering mail directly to the buildings. In that scenario, residents would instead need to collect their mail from a designated pickup location in Årsta. Stockholmshem, the public housing company responsible for the buildings, responded by installing the new communal postboxes in the stairwells. The installation was completed by the end of last year. Initially, some tenants expressed dissatisfaction with the change. Åsa Stenmark, communications chief at Stockholmshem, acknowledged in an email to local news outlet Mitt i that receiving mail directly at one’s apartment is more convenient. She noted that the company understood the early complaints but confirmed that concerns have since subsided. Neighbors such as Mirek have adapted to the new system after receiving official notification from Postnord about the switch.
