Danish Food Ministry Moves Government Jobs from Copenhagen to Aalborg

The Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries will relocate government jobs from Copenhagen to Aalborg. This move comes as part of a major agency consolidation plan.

The ministry is merging two existing agencies into a new unit called the Agency for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. This consolidation aims to strengthen cooperation on supervision, control and subsidy administration.

Approximately 50 full-time positions will move from the capital to Aalborg. These jobs currently handle fisheries tasks within the Agricultural and Fisheries Agency.

The government says this reorganization supports its goal of reducing administrative staff in the public sector. It should also create better specialization opportunities and synergy effects between the two agencies' expertise.

Kenneth Joensen, current director of the Agricultural and Fisheries Agency, will lead the new combined unit. The new agency officially launches on January 1, 2026.

Relocation work begins immediately and should finish by the end of 2026. This move continues Denmark's trend of decentralizing government jobs away from Copenhagen.

Why move jobs to Aalborg? The government seeks to distribute economic activity more evenly across Denmark. This policy helps regional development while reducing pressure on the capital region's housing and infrastructure.

What does this mean for affected employees? Those holding the 50 positions face relocation decisions or potential job changes. The transition period gives workers over two years to adjust to the new arrangement.
