A Liberal Party candidate in Nyborg has withdrawn from the municipal election after revelations about his criminal past surfaced. Jesper Kaaslev Juul Lunde, who was listed 17th on the party's ballot, had previously served a sentence for sexual abuse of a minor.
The local party leadership confirms they were fully aware of the conviction before approving his candidacy. Flemming Kjærulf, deputy chairman of the Liberal Party's local association in Nyborg, stated the organization knew about the case from the beginning.
"We have known about it," Kjærulf said. "We believe in the rule of law. When people have served their sentence, they have the same rights as everyone else. We don't believe in additional punishment."
The case dates back to 2014 when Lunde was 17 years old. In a Facebook post, the candidate explained that media attention about the old case would overshadow his campaign. He decided to withdraw his candidacy for Nyborg City Council.
Despite his withdrawal, Lunde's name will remain on the ballot. Election ballots have already been printed and cannot be changed before the municipal election. Any votes cast for Lunde will count toward the Liberal Party's total.
Kaj Refslund, the Liberal Party's group chairman in Nyborg, confirmed that he and other party leaders, including Mayor Kenneth Muhs, knew about the conviction. Refslund defended the decision to allow Lunde to run despite his criminal record.
"Jesper has served his punishment," Refslund stated. "Our assessment at the time was that he should be allowed to move forward with his life."
This situation raises important questions about political candidate vetting processes in Denmark. Municipal elections operate under strict ballot printing deadlines that create practical challenges when candidates withdraw late in the process.

The candidate has declined further comment on the matter. Attempts to reach Mayor Muhs for additional perspective were unsuccessful.
