Residents of the Sukkertoppen apartment blocks in Oslo can now return home safely. But students living in nearby Hasleveien buildings face weeks of waiting. A major rockslide struck behind student housing near Carl Berners Plass on Sunday afternoon. Two large boulders stopped just short of hitting the building.
Between 300 and 400 people were evacuated due to safety concerns. Approximately 220 of those displaced are students. They cannot move back home immediately and may face several weeks in temporary accommodation.
Students received permission to retrieve essential belongings during a limited window starting Tuesday at 4:00 PM. They will continue staying at the Radisson Blu Alna hotel in the coming days. Geologists have completed their assessment of the landslide area.
The student welfare organization SiO stated their priority is improving the situation for affected students through cooperation with municipal authorities. They acknowledged the uncertainty about returning home or accessing possessions is challenging for students. Close collaboration with emergency services continues to find practical solutions.
This landslide exposes the vulnerability of student housing in areas with geological risks. The extended displacement shows how natural disasters can disrupt academic life for weeks.
