A man in his 20s went on trial at Kristianstad District Court, charged with aggravated assault after a 21-year-old SSU campaigner was beaten while knocking on doors in Bromölla, SVT reported.
Theo Horvath, 21, was knocking on doors with other Social Democrat and SSU campaign workers in an apartment area in Bromölla on Thursday, 10 September, the day before the election. As they came out of an entrance, they met a man whose door they had knocked on a short time earlier.
"He said we were stupid for knocking on his door. Then he pushed me into a glass door and started hitting," Horvath told the court. He estimates that he received 30 to 50 blows to the head and kicks to the body.
A woman driving past picked him up in her car, and he was then taken by ambulance to the emergency department in Kristianstad. "The blows continue and continue. It's blow after blow after blow," Horvath said in questioning during the trial.
"My whole face was swollen and I fell behind in my studies and socially."
The accused denies the assault and says he was only at home in his apartment at the time. He is also charged with violence against a public official for allegedly biting a police officer's arm during his arrest, which he also denies. A verdict is expected in a few weeks.
