Swedish girl missing after boat capsizes in Norway's Lofoten
A Swedish middle-school aged girl is missing after a boat capsized in Norway's Lofoten islands. One rescue service member died during the operation. Search efforts continue with improved weather conditions.

A Swedish girl remains missing after a boat capsized in Norway's Lofoten islands on Friday. The accident occurred in Nappstraumen, a strong tidal current known for challenging navigation conditions.
Six Swedish tourists and one fishing guide were aboard the vessel when it overturned around 1 PM Friday. Rescue services confirmed one person died during the incident, identified as a member of the rescue team.
Search operations continued overnight with vessels from the Norwegian Coast Guard. Police and volunteers also joined the search from land. The missing girl is described as being of middle school age.
Håkon Kjøllmoen of the Norwegian Rescue Service said weather conditions improved by Saturday morning. "Strong winds prevented smaller boats from joining the search earlier," he stated. "The weather looks more favorable now."
Of the other six people involved, a father and child were hospitalized while others escaped unharmed. Medical officials report both hospitalized individuals are in stable condition.
Lofoten's dramatic coastline attracts international tourists but presents real risks. This incident highlights the dangers of Arctic marine environments, even during summer months. Local authorities typically warn visitors about rapidly changing weather conditions in the region.
Why do boating accidents continue in popular tourist areas? Safety measures exist, but unpredictable Arctic waters demand extra caution from all mariners.
