Sweden is reintroducing large-scale civilian evacuation exercises in preparation for potential wartime scenarios. The first of these drills will take place in the autumn on the island of Gotland, as reported by Sveriges Radio Ekot. The purpose of these exercises is to ensure Swedish authorities feel confident in their ability to manage a mass evacuation if such a situation were to arise. According to Alf Söderman, defense director at the County Administrative Board of Gotland, the drills serve both internal and external purposes. He stated, “With that said, it sends a signal to the outside world that we can handle it.” During the Gotland exercise, up to three hundred volunteer participants will be evacuated using regional public transport buses. This marks a return to practices common during the Cold War era, when similar mass evacuation drills were regularly conducted across Sweden in the 1950s and 1960s. The largest of those historical exercises occurred in Stockholm in 1961 and involved thirty thousand people. That 1961 drill was also the last of its kind until now. A larger nationwide evacuation exercise is already planned for northern Sweden in the year 2027. These renewed efforts reflect a broader shift toward civil preparedness in response to evolving security concerns, though the focus remains strictly on testing logistical capabilities.
