A serious moose collision occurred on Sweden's E20 highway early Thursday morning. The accident happened at 3:45 AM when a moose walked onto the roadway near Södermanland County.
Police commander Oscar Palmgren confirmed the severity of the incident. "This was a serious accident involving a passenger car and a large moose," he said in a statement.
One person was traveling in the vehicle during the collision. Emergency services transported the individual to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Moose collisions present particular dangers on Swedish roads due to the animals' substantial size. Adult moose can weigh over 400 kilograms, causing severe damage to vehicles and serious injuries to occupants.
The E20 highway serves as a major transportation route across southern Sweden. It connects several important cities including Stockholm, Örebro, and Gothenburg.
Police have not released additional details about the driver's condition. Investigations into the exact circumstances of the accident continue.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of wildlife collisions on Scandinavian roads. Drivers in rural Sweden must remain especially vigilant during dawn and dusk hours when moose are most active.
