A 65-year-old man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault committed about 13 years ago, Østjyllands Politi said in a statement. The aggrieved party in the case is one of his daughters, who was around 12 years old at the time of the offence, according to Politiken, Berlingske and Ekstra Bladet.
Police reopened the case after new information emerged in connection with recordings for a TV 2 programme. The daughter has been interviewed and various materials have been reviewed, police said. Østjyllands Politi would not specify what exactly the man is charged with.
He will appear at a custody hearing on Wednesday at 09.30 at Retten i Randers, where a prosecutor will demand he be remanded in custody. Police told TV 2 the arrest followed the reopening of the investigation into suspected sexual assault of his youngest daughter, 25-year-old Vivi.
The new information came during filming of the TV 2 programme 'Fars lille pige', in which the man's three daughters speak about assaults carried out by their father. According to TV 2, the man was acquitted in a case in the 1990s in which he was accused of sexually assaulting one of his daughters, then seven years old. He was later reported over possible assaults on his two other minor daughters, but those cases never came to court.
In the programme, the eldest daughter, Sarah Sommer, re-establishes contact with her father Christian and records him in secret to get him to confess the assaults she believes he committed. TV 2 reports that she is not the aggrieved party in the new case. Authorities received notifications several times from 2013 onwards about possible assaults on the girl in the current case, the broadcaster reported.
Defence lawyer Lasse Hummelhoff Frandsen told TV 2 that his client had been subjected to "pressure to confirm a specific presentation of the past" through the hidden recordings. "My client unequivocally denies that any assault took place," he said. Mai-Brit Storm Thygesen, legal counsel for the daughters, told TV 2 she was "very pleased" that police had now arrested the father.
"The three women are very happy that the police have taken the case seriously," she said.
