Teenager Seriously Injured in Car Explosion Near Nykøbing

An 18-year-old man suffered serious injuries after an explosion in a car at Vesterfald near Nykøbing on Sunday afternoon. Police confirmed the incident involved fireworks and cannon crackers. Another 18-year-old man was also in the vehicle at the time of the explosion.

According to police operations manager Thomas Hald, the blast likely occurred when one of the men attempted to light a cannon cracker. Evidence suggests the explosion happened outside the window rather than inside the car itself.

Bomb disposal experts from the Danish Defense's EOD unit were called to the scene. Officers discovered fireworks inside the vehicle that required specialized handling.

"We found fireworks and cannon crackers in the car," Hald stated. "These are items we assess as too dangerous for regular handling. That's why we decided to call in the EOD team."

He emphasized that civilians should never handle such explosive materials. The police received the emergency call at 3:41 PM.

Authorities noted the incident did not involve large quantities of illegal fireworks. The quick response from both police and bomb disposal units prevented potential further danger.

This incident highlights the real risks of handling fireworks improperly, even in what might seem like casual circumstances. The involvement of military bomb experts underscores how seriously Danish authorities treat such explosive incidents.
