TV 2 Eliminates Photographer Positions in Regional Offices

By Nordics Today •

TV 2 eliminates all video photographer positions in regional offices, forcing journalists to handle camera work themselves. The cuts affect six full-time positions and stem from financial pressures including lost VAT exemptions. The changes will gradually reduce work for contractor Screen Story Film through 2026.

TV 2 Eliminates Photographer Positions in Regional Offices

TV 2 will no longer employ dedicated video photographers at its regional offices. News editor Karianne Solbrække announced the changes during a staff meeting.

The cuts affect six full-time positions across TV 2's six regional bureaus. These positions were contracted through TV 2's subsidiary Screen Story Film.

Journalists will now need to work as video journalists themselves. The broadcaster says this move aims to simplify operations and reduce costs.

Solbrække explained the decision stems from tough economic conditions. She acknowledged photographers have delivered excellent work for many years but said hard choices were necessary.

The changes connect to Norway's state budget, which removed TV 2's VAT exemption. This financial pressure forced the broadcaster to restructure.

Screen Story CEO Tommy Aase called the cuts unexpected. He said TV 2 wants a new, more flexible agreement with his company.

Reporters will take on more production responsibilities under the new arrangement. The transition will gradually reduce Screen Story's assignments through Third Quarter 2026.

Aase confirmed his company will work closely with employee representatives. They will create individual plans for each affected office.

This restructuring reflects broader challenges in Norwegian media. Broadcasters face increasing pressure to do more with fewer resources while maintaining quality coverage.

What does this mean for regional news coverage? Journalists taking on camera work may struggle to match the technical quality audiences expect. The changes could affect how local stories are told across Norway.
