A record 419 couples married in churches across Norway on Valentine’s Day, according to preliminary figures from the Church of Norway. This number represents an increase compared to last year’s total of 277 weddings held on the same date. In 2024, there were 60 weddings, and in 2023, only 38 couples tied the knot in church on February 14. Over 120 churches throughout the country opened their doors for drop-in wedding ceremonies, meaning couples did not need to make advance reservations. The Church of Norway describes these events as regular church weddings but conducted in simpler settings. Harald Hegstad, leader of the Church Council, expressed enthusiasm about the turnout in a press statement. He said it was fantastic that so many people wanted to celebrate love in church. Hegstad emphasized that the ceremonies focused on the essential elements: the promise between two individuals and God’s blessing over their marriage. Final numbers may increase slightly as additional parishes submit updated reports. Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim hosted the highest number of weddings, with 27 couples exchanging vows. In Oslo Cathedral, Bishop Sunniva Gylver officiated the ceremonies. At the county level, Vestland had the most marriages with 68 couples, followed by Akershus with 55. Only two couples married in Finnmark. The Church of Norway continues to offer accessible and meaningful wedding services.
