A large energy wood pile burned beside Telppääntie road in Hankasalmi on Saturday evening. The fire department reported the pile measured about 15 meters long, four meters wide, and two meters high. Flames spread across approximately five meters of the wood pile.
No buildings stood nearby, and the fire posed no risk of spreading to the surrounding forest area. Officials suspect the blaze started from a campfire lit in the nearby area.
Energy wood piles like this one typically contain logging residues and small-diameter trees used for bioenergy production. These wood storage sites are common throughout Finland's forestry regions.
While such incidents rarely threaten structures, they highlight the ongoing challenge of preventing unauthorized fires near combustible materials during dry periods. The timing coincides with typical outdoor recreation season when campfire activity increases.
