Police responded to reports of an explosion in Gothenburg's Biskopsgården district early Tuesday morning. Multiple patrols arrived at a residential building on Hisingen island around 7 AM. Authorities evacuated the property immediately.
Officials confirmed the incident remains active. "This is very much ongoing," said police spokesperson Jennifer Last in a statement.
Police described the situation as involving a suspected dangerous object. Their initial assessment indicates the explosion caused minor damage only. Officers cordoned off a large area around the building for investigation.
"We have blocked off a larger area to properly investigate," Last explained. "We also need to ensure there are no other dangerous items present."
Biskopsgården is a suburban district located on Hisingen, Gothenburg's largest island. The area has faced challenges with gang-related violence in recent years. This incident follows a pattern of explosions targeting properties in Swedish urban areas, though police have not confirmed any connection to criminal activity in this specific case.
Local residents reported hearing a loud blast before police arrival. The response included multiple emergency vehicles and specialized units. Investigators will examine the scene throughout the morning hours.
Such incidents, while alarming, typically result in limited physical damage but understandably create community concern about public safety in affected neighborhoods.
