Gjensidige Insurance Cuts 145 Positions in Denmark

Norwegian insurance company Gjensidige is cutting 145 positions in Denmark as part of cost-cutting measures. The restructuring will affect both direct layoffs and unfilled vacancies, with the Aabenraa office closing entirely. The move comes despite the company reporting significant growth in the Danish market.

Gjensidige Insurance Cuts 145 Positions in Denmark

Insurance company Gjensidige is eliminating 145 positions in Denmark to reduce costs. The company announced this move in a press release.

Country manager Iason H. Johannesen said in the statement that while these changes are necessary for Gjensidige's future competitiveness, it is never easy to say goodbye to valued colleagues. He thanked all affected employees for their dedication and contributions over the years.

Seventy-five employees and managers will lose their jobs directly. Another 70 positions will not be refilled when they become vacant.

All affected staff have been notified about the changes. They will be laid off once their duties are transferred to other workers. The company will offer them professional support services.

Gjensidige also expects to close some departments, though the press release did not specify how many. The company confirmed it will shut down its office in Aabenraa by year's end.

The Norwegian-based insurer said it has experienced strong growth in Denmark. But this expansion came with costs that became too high. The company has spent recent years working to streamline operations and reduce expenses.

Gjensidige emphasized that its current focus is supporting employees through this transition period. The company operates in six countries and employs nearly 4,700 people worldwide. Just over 1,000 of those work in Denmark.

This restructuring reflects the challenging insurance market in Scandinavia, where companies face pressure to maintain profitability while managing operational costs. The closure of regional offices like Aabenraa's suggests Gjensidige is consolidating its Danish operations toward larger urban centers.
