A man in his 50s from Skellefteå municipality has been convicted of negligent benefit fraud after claiming sick-child leave for more than 200 days while he was working, SVT reported. Skellefteå District Court sentenced him to a suspended sentence and 40 day-fines.

The fraud took place between 2024 and 2025, when the man applied for compensation for care of a sick child on ten occasions even though he was working or on scheduled leave from his job. In total he registered sick-child leave for 236 days during the year. At his peak he claimed almost a month in a row and received 19,890 kronor for that period.

Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, paid out just over 105,000 kronor to the man in total.

The man has said he did not understand that he was doing anything wrong because he did not know or understand the rules, and he described it as a mistake. He told the court he had help with the applications and believed he was entitled to the benefit because he cares for a seriously ill child. He has repaid most of the money to Försäkringskassan.
