A Danish court sentenced a 41-year-old man to 12 years in prison for attempted murder. The conviction stems from a highway shooting incident where he fired at least six shots at another driver.
The Eastern High Court ruled that Morten Jørgensen committed attempted murder on September 28, 2023. The shooting occurred on the Helsingør Motorway near Copenhagen.
Court documents reveal the confrontation began when Jørgensen flashed his lights at a preceding car. He wanted the driver to move over so he could pass. Instead, the other driver braked suddenly.
Jørgensen then pulled a pistol and fired multiple shots at the vehicle. The targeted driver escaped injury, but bullets shattered the car's windows.
The convicted man previously told courts about his military background. He also mentioned participating in a shooting club for over 15 years.
Jørgensen had appealed an earlier conviction from September 2024. He argued the incident constituted endangerment rather than attempted murder. The high court rejected this argument and upheld the original verdict.
His defense lawyer expressed disappointment with the ruling. Kristian Mølgaard said his client felt harassed in traffic and only intended to scare the other driver.
Mølgaard claimed the shots targeted the car door rather than the cabin. He emphasized the use of a small caliber weapon and denied any intent to kill.
The court clearly disagreed with this characterization of events. The 12-year sentence reflects the seriousness of firing multiple shots at another vehicle on a busy highway.
This case highlights how quickly road rage incidents can escalate into life-threatening situations. The outcome could have been far worse given the shooter's weapons experience and the proximity to Denmark's capital city.
