A young man suffered serious injuries when a firework exploded in his car on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred near a McDonald's restaurant in Nykøbing on the Danish island of Mors.
The 18-year-old man was attempting to throw a firecracker out of his car window when it detonated prematurely. Police confirmed the explosion caused severe injuries to his hand and arm.
Emergency services airlifted the victim to a regional hospital via medical helicopter. Authorities now confirm the young man is out of life-threatening danger.
Another 18-year-old passenger in the vehicle reported hearing problems following the blast. Police Commissioner Henrik Jensen stated both men were involved in the incident at Vesterfald location.
Bomb disposal experts from the Danish Defense EOD unit in Skive were called to investigate. They recovered between five and ten pieces of what appears to be illegal fireworks from the vehicle.
Police received the emergency call at 3:41 PM local time. Authorities are treating this as a case involving prohibited pyrotechnics.
Firework regulations in Denmark are strict, but this incident shows dangerous items still circulate despite controls. The consequences could have been far worse given the confined space of the vehicle.
