Police received multiple reports of loud bangs in Gävle around 8 PM on Tuesday evening. Several patrol units immediately responded to the scene in the Brynäs district.
Officers confirmed they are investigating the incident as a serious crime. Multiple people sustained injuries during the event, according to police statements.
Authorities later confirmed several shots had been fired. No arrests had been made as of 11 PM that evening.
Police spokesperson Magnus Jansson Klarin said, "We have several injured persons, and this is being investigated as a serious crime."
The area includes large apartment complexes, a nearby school, and a church. Multiple locations remained cordoned off as police continued their investigation.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing loud bangs and seeing multiple people receiving medical attention. Police confirmed they are conducting both an intensive investigation and a search for suspects.
This incident follows another shooting in central Gävle just three weeks ago. Six people were shot in that previous incident, though none suffered life-threatening injuries. A 13-year-old boy was arrested near that crime scene.
The repeated shootings in this Swedish city of 75,000 residents raise concerns about public safety in what many consider a typically peaceful Nordic community. Local residents now face the reality that gun violence can occur even in smaller Swedish cities.
