Oslo Students Receive Emergency Funds After Landslide

Student residents evacuated after Sunday's landslide at Carl Berner in Oslo will receive 1,000 kroner each. The student welfare organization announced the emergency payment Monday afternoon.

The funds cover immediate needs like toiletries and essential purchases. Students do not need to submit receipts for reimbursement.

Approximately 220 students remain evacuated from buildings at Hasleveien 9 and 11. Between 300 and 400 residents were originally displaced by the landslide.

Oslo municipality is providing temporary accommodation for all affected residents. Officials say it's unclear when people can return home. Geological investigations must first determine the area's safety.

The student welfare organization noted they cleared loose masses following a 2021 warning from planning authorities. No additional reinforcement work was done at that time because the slope already had adequate bolt and net protection.

Regular safety checks and maintenance occurred over subsequent years. Additional rock reinforcement work was completed in 2016, with further mass removal in 2022.

The immediate financial assistance helps students cope with unexpected displacement costs. Yet the prolonged evacuation highlights ongoing geological risks in Oslo's hilly neighborhoods.
