Sweden Democrats Threaten to Vote Down Kristersson Government

The Sweden Democrats will vote against a government with Ulf Kristersson as prime minister if the party does not receive ministerial positions. Party leader Jimmie Åkesson confirmed this position in a recent interview. He stated they would press the red button in parliament to block such a government formation. Åkesson has long maintained his party must either join the government or serve in opposition after next year's election. The Liberal Party opposes including the Sweden Democrats in government. Åkesson told reporters he would accept Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson becoming prime minister if his party gets excluded. He also expressed readiness for a potential snap election if four consecutive prime ministerial votes fail. The Sweden Democrats leader insisted his party would not compromise on this demand. He said smaller coalition partners must accept their position. The Liberal Party's board decided two weeks ago to reject any government including the Sweden Democrats. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson invited Tidö Agreement party leaders to his Strängnäs home for pre-Christmas talks. The meeting aims to establish a common direction for the next governing period rather than resolve the current conflict.
