Driver Hits Child at Finnish Crosswalk, Police Seek Witnesses

Police in Western Finland are requesting witness accounts following a traffic incident at a school crosswalk. The accident occurred in Seinäjoki between 9 and 10 AM on Monday near Marttila School.

A man driving a red car struck the rear of a bicycle being ridden by a child crossing at the Kirkkokatu and Vapaudentie intersection. The driver stopped immediately to check on the child's condition. After determining no serious injuries occurred, the driver continued his journey.

The child sustained minor injuries in the collision. The bicycle also suffered damage during the incident.

Authorities believe there may be witnesses to the event. Police are asking the driver to come forward voluntarily. They also urge anyone who saw the incident or has relevant information to contact investigators.

This type of collision highlights the ongoing challenges of pedestrian safety near schools during morning hours. The driver's decision to leave after confirming the child's condition raises questions about proper accident protocol.

Witnesses can submit information via the police tip email at vihjeet.pohjanmaa@poliisi.fi or by calling the tip line at 0295 415 501.
