A female cyclist was struck by a car on Thursday morning around 8 AM. The incident occurred on Södertäljevägen near the Järna traffic interchange in southern Stockholm County.
Witnesses reported seeing the driver leave the scene after the collision. Police confirmed they are investigating a hit-and-run case.
"The vehicle left the location and witnesses saw that the car hit the cyclist," said police spokesperson Mats Eriksson in an official statement.
Emergency services found the woman unconscious at the scene. Medical crews transported her to hospital via air ambulance due to the seriousness of her injuries.
Police are now assisting rescue services at the location and interviewing witnesses. They have launched a criminal investigation for gross negligent bodily injury and fleeing a traffic accident.
Hit-and-run incidents remain a persistent problem in Swedish traffic safety despite stricter penalties in recent years. The use of an air ambulance indicates authorities considered the injuries serious enough to require rapid specialized care.
Järna is located approximately 40 kilometers southwest of central Stockholm and serves as a major transportation hub with heavy commuter traffic.
