Kalmar Municipality is collecting eggs from all suppliers after salmonella was detected at one producer. The contamination was found during a routine inspection at Stjärnägg, one of the municipality's egg suppliers.
No eggs have been confirmed as contaminated yet. But the company is recalling eggs as a precautionary measure. The affected eggs were sold at major Swedish grocery chains including Coop, Ica and Axfood stores.
Municipal officials decided to halt all egg serving in public facilities. They will not resume until they can guarantee the eggs are contamination-free.
This recall affects schools, nursing homes and other public institutions across the municipality. Parents and residents are being notified about the temporary removal of eggs from menus.
The swift action shows how seriously Swedish authorities treat food safety threats. But it also reveals vulnerabilities in the supply chain when multiple retailers source from the same producers.
