An 18-year-old man is suspected of planning a terrorist attack in central Stockholm on behalf of Islamic State. Swedish prosecutors announced the case in a press release on Thursday.
Authorities will file charges against the man for preparation of a terrorist crime. They believe he intended to carry out an attack in the name of the extremist group.
"We maintain that the purpose of these preparations was to create serious fear among the population in the name of Islamic State," said deputy chief prosecutor Henrik Olin. "The criminal act could have seriously harmed Sweden."
The planned Stockholm terrorist attack represents ongoing security challenges for European nations. Sweden has faced previous Islamist threats despite its reputation as a peaceful Nordic country.
