Eastern Iceland Reaches 21°C in Unusual October Heat
Eastern Iceland experiences exceptional October warmth with temperatures reaching 21.2°C. Multiple locations recorded temperatures over 20°C, potentially setting new daily records. The warm spell may continue through midweek.

Eastern Iceland continues to experience unusually warm temperatures this October. Yesterday, temperatures exceeded 20°C at several weather stations across the region.
Borgarfjörður recorded the highest temperature at 21.2°C before noon. The heat remained around 20°C until approximately 3 PM. Seyðisfjörður also reached about 21°C, while Neskaupstaður and Skjaldþingsstaðir in Vopnafjörður both saw temperatures over 20°C.
Today's forecast predicts continued warmth up to 16°C. The same areas that experienced heat yesterday should see similar conditions today. These include Fljótsdalshérað, Seyðisfjörður, Norðfjörður, and Vopnafjörður. The warm spell could last until Wednesday.
Weather officials noted that temperatures last reached 20°C in October back in 2017 at Kvískerjar. Before that, it occurred in 2013 at Reyðarfjörður. Meteorologists believe yesterday may have set new daily temperature records.
Where is this warm air coming from? The mild air over the Eastfjords originated west of the Azores before the weekend. It flows inland and descends due to mountain terrain in Northern and Eastern Iceland. Weather experts expressed surprise at how well the air retained its warmth during this journey.
This extended October warmth represents unusual weather patterns for Iceland, where temperatures typically drop significantly by this time of year. The persistent mild conditions challenge normal seasonal expectations for the region.
