Police in Western Finland continue to ask for witnesses to a traffic incident in Seinäjoki. A driver struck a child on a bicycle at a crosswalk on October 20 around 7:45 AM.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Ruukintie and Siipipyöränkatu streets. A child was crossing the road on a bicycle when a Volvo station wagon hit them.
According to police communications officer Jasmin Granholm, no tips have come in yet. She provided this update on Thursday around 11 AM.
The child told police the driver signaled with their hand to proceed across the crosswalk. Despite this gesture, the driver then moved forward and struck the bicycle's rear wheel.
The impact caused the child to fall to the ground. The driver did not stop to check on the child's condition after the collision.
Police describe the vehicle as a gray or dark-colored Volvo station wagon. It was traveling on Ruukintie toward the Kivistö S-market direction.
The child sustained minor injuries in the incident. Authorities confirm there were witnesses to the event.
Police are asking the driver to come forward voluntarily. They also request anyone who saw the incident to share their observations.
Witnesses can contact police through their tip email at vihjeet.pohjanmaa@poliisi.fi. They can also call the tip line at 0295 415 501.
This incident highlights the importance of clear communication between drivers and pedestrians at crosswalks. When drivers give signals, pedestrians reasonably expect them to follow through with safe actions.
