Super Typhoon Ragasa strikes Hong Kong and other major cities in southern China
Super Typhoon Ragasa has killed at least 14 people in Taiwan and left 124 others missing. The storm caused severe flooding before moving toward southern China overnight.
In eastern Taiwan, persistent rainfall caused a dammed lake to overflow. Powerful flows of muddy water and rocks destroyed a bridge and swept away vehicles and people. Taiwan's rescue service confirmed the death toll.
The typhoon also affected the northern Philippines. At least three people died there and five remain missing due to floods and landslides. Over 17,000 residents sought shelter from the storms.
The typhoon continued into Hong Kong and other major cities in southern China. Waves as high as lampposts washed over coastal walkways in Hong Kong. Strong winds knocked down hundreds of trees. The Associated Press reports 13 people were injured but no deaths occurred.
More than one million people evacuated in Guangdong province ahead of the storm. Authorities expect powerful winds, heavy rain, and high waves. Schools, public transport, and shops closed in about a dozen cities. Several flights were canceled.
This storm is feared to be the strongest in the region for several years. The widespread damage highlights the vulnerability of coastal cities to extreme weather events. The rapid evacuation efforts likely prevented higher casualties in China.
